Do most people use already-made postcards? Does anyone ever make their own on notecards or something similar? How often are e-postcards used? Just wondering...
Lindsey, we get a good combination of "everything"! A lot of people do use ready-made cards. Many also create their own cards. I'd say 1/3 of our participants use e-cards.
If you've been doing this for a few years, folks (and I know many of you have), please speak up!
Thanks,
Leni
Could you elaborate on what type of information we should include in our postcards?
I'd like to provide some sort of criteria for my class and I'm not so sure myself! Do we focus on our state's facts for postcards being mailed within the United States and then broaden it to our country for postcards mailed outside US?
I thank you in advance!!
Your postcards should share physical and cultural geographic information. Include information about industry, significant events (historic and/or annual), monuments, famous people in your area as well as geographic location, climate, landforms, etc.
As succinctly as possible, describe your area and what life is like there. Difficult, on a postcard, I know :-)
I hope that helps!
Best,
Leni
HI!
Do people actually find pre-made postcards? I have not been able to find any that showcase the town I teach in. Would it be possible to use postcards that picture nearby cities (i.e. Providence, Boston)?
Also is it acceptable to type the postcards myself (with student input) and have students design the front of the postcards-that's what I did for the first batch. I also plan to have students email cards (I found some sites that look to be free and good).
How do people manage this project, I would love some tips!
Thanks!
Jamie
Jamie, other than the common obiligations (send cards to everyone on your list and share geographic, not personal information), this is a "do it your way" project. You and your students can decide what kind of cards to send and how to fill them out and mail them.
Will some of you please share management tips with Jamie? I shared on the "how-to" page on the project site what I did when I first started the project and was still in the classroom. I'm sure many of you have come up with clever, and perhaps more workable, solutions.
Best,
Leni
My daughter and I are from a very small town. We searched high and low for a postcard, but with no success. We decided to create our own postcard. It may not be the prettiest, but it displays the state and the location of our town and the state's capitol. We even added a little trivia to make it more interesting.

This may be a stupid question but how many postcards do we send out at a time?
You may send out as many postcards at one time as you wish! Some teachers spread the project out over months, while others send all their cards within weeks.

Leni
Hi,
Is it acceptable to email short PowerPoints or Word documents as postcards?
Trish
Australia
Mrs. Wade - both Word and PPT cards are quite acceptable. Most of us have either Open Source or Office applications that deal with Word or PPT. Have fun creating your presentation or document!
I've just found an excellent site which I will use with my kids to show them how far places are 'as the crow flies'. http://www.indo.com/distance/
Cheers,
Trish
I really like the PCG Blog! This will be much easier to use than what we've used in the past. Thanks Leni!
We have participated many years in this project and my students love all the mail. They especially enjoy the snail mail postcards! In the past, we have gone to our town's Chamber of Commerce and they have graciously donated postcards for us to send with pictures of places in our town. We have also purchased postcards with state information. Both are colorful and fun to display!
I'm glad to hear the blog is an improvement.
Next year, I may try a wiki :-) If time and patience permit, I may create a "podcast" to share with you all, as well. Oh the possibilities when one is out here in the today's cyber-world!
Thanks for sharing your tips about cards.

Hi! This is my first time doing the project and I am having a hard time locating a site to make digital postcards. I tried Kodak Picture This but am unable to link to it or to locate it through google. Any suggestions on how to get to this or any other source?

Hi! I am a first time participant and am having a hard time locating a site to create digital postcards. Kodak Picture This does not seem to be working. Any suggestions on how to use that or any other site. (The link didn't work and I was unable to get to it by doing a google search.)

Hi,
I just wanted to see if others have begun to receive postcards. My students have sent over 60 out already and so far nothing has come in. Is this typical?
I also want to caution people, I opened my email, one titled "Postcard" thinking it was from this project, it was a virus.
